Gift of Lucie Washington Mitcheson in memory of Robert Stockton Johnson Mitcheson for the Robert Stockton Johnson Mitcheson Collection, 1938LabelWilliam Lathrop was considered one of the first Pennsylvania Impressionists, having moved to the area in 1898, although his intimate, poetic compositions were less influential among younger artists than the monumental paintings of Daniel Garber or Edward Redfield. Lathrop’s preference for working in the studio, rather than out of doors, distinguished him from other artists in the group, whose dazzling color effects stand in direct contrast to the muted hues of his starkly simplified landscapes. He was associated with a wider circle of American Impressionists, including J. Alden Weir and John Henry Twachtman, both of whom worked in Connecticut and New York.* Works in the collection are moved off view for many different reasons.
