In 1905 Chana Orloff and her family fled the small Ukrainian village of Tsarakonstantinovka and settled in Palestine. Five years later she moved to Paris, where she hoped to improve her skills as a seamstress and earn enough money to support her large family. Shortly after her arrival in the French capital, Orloff enrolled in sculpture classes at the Russian Academy, where she befriended several fellow Jewish artists, including Chaim Soutine and Ossip Zadkine. Orloff’s sculpture, with its stylized simplifications of form, found an immediate following and by the early 1920s she was among the most successful artists of her generation.
