LabelNi Zan was considered the archetype of the Yuan dynasty literati painter. His dry brush and spare painting style, in which he pared all the elements down to their essence, became a primary model for both Chinese and Japanese literati painters. The inscription at the top narrates the event depicted: the solitary monk who wandered through the Buddhist grottoes at Longmen.
