Thomas Eakins, American, 1844 - 1916
Oil on canvas
1929-184-12Gift of Mrs. Thomas Eakins and Miss Mary Adeline Williams, 1929
LabelEakins returned from a stay in the Bad Lands of the Dakota Territory with the cowboy's fringed buckskin suit worn here by Eakins's colleague and student, Franklin Schenck. Posed in Eakins's studio, Schenck sings and plays the guitar while Samuel Murray watches and listens in an evocation of life on a ranch that one critic called "romantic," an unusual description for an Eakins work.
