Thomas Eakins (American, 1844–1916)
Eakins returned from a stay in the Bad Lands of the Dakota Territory with the cowboy's fringed buckskin suit worn here by Eakins's colleague and student, Franklin Schenck. Posed in Eakins's studio, Schenck sings and plays the guitar while Samuel Murray watches and listens in an evocation of life on a ranch that one critic called "romantic," an unusual description for an Eakins work.
