LabelBorn in Ohio, Worthington Whittredge worked in Cincinnati as a house and sign painter, a portraitist, and later a landscape painter. After ten years spent traveling and working in Europe, he returned to New York in 1859 with a crisp, naturalistic style shaped by the precision of contemporary German painting. His style gracefully adapted to American subjects and Americans’ taste for quiet, light-filled landscapes. This tranquil view of a sunrise on a beach at Newport shares the contemplative spirit and spaciousness of contemporary paintings by his colleagues in the second generation of the New York School.* Works in the collection are moved off view for many different reasons.
