While the late twentieth century was the era of red power ties and necktie-free casual wear, conversational ties allowed for an expression of personality. The hit of 1986 was the fish tie—shaped like a salmon, tuna, trout, or other fish—the brainchild of Mark Abramoff and two Wisconsin buddies, which sold five thousand a week. Five years later, one of Nicole Miller's signature prints commented wryly on contemporary culture by showing lurid New York tabloid headlines, including "Headless Body in Topless Bar."
