LabelDe Guatemala was born in Mexico City and grew up in Guatemala, where she became an established sculptor before moving to Pennsylvania in 1975. Working primarily in welded steel and chrome, the artist drew inspiration from ancient Mayan art and architecture in creating her forms, but gave them a distinctively modern edge. She had a strong interest in mythology and described her works as inhabited by deities and natural elements such as wind, earth, and water. The sense of inner life suggested by such inhabitation is evident in the dancing, treelike forms of this printed paper construction. |
