Costume and Textiles "Paint" Quilt Made in United States, North and Central Americac. 1979-83 Sarah Mary Taylor, American, 1916 - 2000 Cotton and polyester; running stitch Currently not on view 2006-163-8 The Ella King Torrey Collection of African American Quilts, 2006 |
LabelThis quilt is appliquéd with whimsical cats and the word "paint" with the P intentionally reversed. "Paint" might refer to the name of the artist's own cat. In the square at the upper left the cat appears to be stalking a figure of Santa Claus that Taylor traced from a cookie cutter. She recalled that the appliqué technique inspired her imagination and allowed for greater freedom in design than traditional piecing. |
