LabelThis plate is part of a seventy-two-piece dessert service sold by the Sèvres factory on December 30, 1811, to Eugène de Beauharnais (1781–1824), Napoleon I’s stepson and viceroy of Italy. The scenes of Switzerland depicted on the plates (here, a view of the gate and bridge at Fribourg) are after engravings from Tableaux de la Suisse, ou voyage pittoresque fait dans less XIII cantons du Corps Helvétique (Pictures of Switzerland, or a Picturesque Voyage Made in the Thirteen Cantons of the Helvetic Confederation) that was published in Paris in 1774.* Works in the collection are moved off view for many different reasons. Although gallery locations on the website are updated regularly, there is no guarantee that this object will be on display on the day of your visit. |
