LabelDuring the hippie era, the unique statements made by one-of-a-kind garments were seen as an authentic repudiation of conformity to the establishment. Manufactured garments were sometimes modified—such as the blue jeans and denim jackets that had begun as symbols of the working class—and were commonly seen as blank canvases for individual embellishment.
