Panel from a Set of Bed Hangings

c. 1770
Printed by John Munns (English, active Crayford, Kent, from c. 1769 to 1784)
The design of this copperplate-printed fabric incorporates images likely taken from contemporary engravings. For example, the latticed garden pavilion recalls designs found in architectural books of the period such as Designs of Chinese Buildings, Furniture, Dresses, Machines, and Utensils (1757) by the English architect William Chambers (1723-1796) and is given added whimsy with the addition of drapery and lanterns.
