The front is engraved with the crowned cipher JR 8 and the word Amen in a scrolled oval. The sides and back are engraved with two verses of the Jacobite anthem (a prayer for the restoration of the Stuart monarchy).

This wineglass is unlike the other "Amen" glasses in the Museum's collection in that it has an incised-twist stem. This type of stem enjoyed a brief period of popularity in the mid-eighteenth century. It is an imitation of the air-twist stem, but instead of trapping air within the stem before it is drawn out, the incised lines are applied to the exterior.
