Sampler

c. 1830-1840
Embroidered by Mary Lamb (Scottish, born c. 1831)
Mary Lamb inscribed this sampler with the initials of her family members in the center and her parents’ names in the bottom left and right corners. James Lamb and Christine Wilson married in 1815 in Lanarkshire, an important trade center in central Scotland where James Lamb worked as a wine and spirits merchant. Mary embroidered “Glasgow” over a Georgian-style house in the center, indicating the city where the Lamb family settled. Homes found on Scottish samplers are often modeled after local dwellings, and the one pictured here may be that of the Lamb family.
