Like those nearby, this sampler features a version of the early Latin alphabet. Rachel Andrew also included coronets with the initials of her family members below. Census records show that dozens of women named Rachel Andrew lived in eighteenth-century Scotland. This sampler’s maker may have been the daughter of Thomas Andrew of Renfrew; the initials “TA” appear in the bottom left corner. Renfrew had one of the most prosperous linen industries in Scotland, and this embroidery is executed on a linen foundation.
