Modern and Contemporary Art Quarry, Evening 1913 Daniel Garber, American, 1880 - 1958 Oil on canvas * Gallery 119, American Art, first floor W1921-1-3 Purchased with the W. P. Wilstach Fund, 1921 |
LabelThis composition is the largest in Daniel Garber’s acclaimed series of quarry paintings. The artist was attracted to the awe-inspiring grandeur of the quarries near his home in Lumberville, Pennsylvania, and he used dazzling tonalities to transform rugged hillsides, disfigured by modern industry, into sun-drenched landscapes of great natural beauty. In this work Garber rendered the quarry’s summit near the top edge of the canvas, thus accentuating its monumental presence and transcendent significance. Quarry, Evening also faithfully records a moment when the setting sun casts its glow across the upper ledges of the cliffs, bathing much of the quarry and the shimmering ridge of trees and foliage above in deep purple shadow.* Works in the collection are moved off view for many different reasons. Although gallery locations on the website are updated regularly, there is no guarantee that this object will be on display on the day of your visit. |
