Still Life with Fish

17th century
Abraham van Beyeren (Dutch (active The Hague, Leiden, Delft, and Alkmaar), 1620/21–1690)
Abraham van Beyeren specialized in still lifes and seascapes, and later took up flower and pronk (sumptuous) still lifes. This simple kitchen table is covered with locally available seafood including herring, crabs, and mussels. Van Beyeren painted in a soft, nearly monochromatic style and sought to balance the fleshy texture of fish with the harder surfaces of copper and earthenware.
