In this painting, earthly and heavenly figures witness the Crucifixion on Golgotha. At the base of the cross the Virgin swoons, supported by John the Evangelist and Mary Magdalene. Longinus pierces Christ's side with a lance: his closed eyes a reminder of his terrible eye affliction that was miraculously cured when Christ's blood washed over his face. From above, God the Father looks on the scene. Before him floats a glowing nimbus with a dove, representing the Holy Spirit.
