Valley of Cadore, Italy

1873
George Inness (American, 1825–1894)
The village of Cadore in northern Italy was the birthplace of Titian, and its surrounding peaks inspired his art as well as Inness’s. This pairing of a preliminary watercolor and later oil of the same subject illustrates Inness’s working method: he established the broad planes of color and form in the watercolor, and then translated them into a luminous oil portrait of Monte Rite overlooking the town of Valley of Cadore.
