LabelThe village of Cadore in northern Italy was the birthplace of Titian, and its surrounding peaks inspired his art as well as Inness’s. This pairing of a preliminary watercolor and later oil of the same subject illustrates Inness’s working method: he established the broad planes of color and form in the watercolor, and then translated them into a luminous oil portrait of Monte Rite overlooking the town of Valley of Cadore.
