Gifts in support of The Paul Strand Collection at the Philadelphia Museum of Art

The Philadelphia Museum of Art is presented with the singular opportunity to assemble the finest and most comprehensive collection in the world of the work of Paul Strand, the great twentieth-century photographer who, more than any other figure in the field, defined the modernist possibilities of the camera and the photographic medium.

Through the generosity of leading supporters, major portions of the encyclopedic collection of Strand’s work from the Paul Strand Archive—owned since the artist’s death by the Aperture Foundation—have recently been donated to the Museum’s Alfred Stieglitz Center, joining the more than six hundred Strand photographs acquired by the Museum over the past four decades. The new gifts comprise 2,053 objects and include all seventy of Strand’s extant lantern slides from his first decade of work, as well as major groupings of photographs from every project in his long career.

These transformative gifts have inspired the Museum to bring to Philadelphia the final piece of the puzzle—1,275 prints representing the finest examples of every image remaining among Aperture’s holdings—to create The Paul Strand Collection.

The task of conserving The Paul Strand Collection is profoundly meaningful for the study of photography. Nowhere else in the world will there be holdings of Strand’s work of such size and significance. At this critical moment in the history of the medium, when silver-based processes are quickly giving way to digital technology, it is imperative that we preserve the key bodies of traditional photography for the benefit of future generations.

We invite supporters to join with the Museum in its stewardship of the extraordinary achievements of an artist whose creative vision, over more than six decades, shaped the course of modern photography.
