The work of Constantin Brâncuşi redefined sculpture for a new century. Working in Paris after 1904, Brâncuşi aimed to develop a sculptural idiom that looked absolutely modern. Seeking inspiration in ancient, folk, and exotic precedents, which bypassed the classical Western tradition of sculpture, and brought his style to a more essential and simplified form. The Philadelphia Museum of Art has the largest collection of Brâncuşi sculptures in the U.S. and this tour explores his work within the context of his modernist contemporaries.

Back by popular demand! This course offers an opportunity for close study and informal discussions in the galleries. Each evening we’ll look at one work of art, allowing time for conversation and questions. As a group, we’ll enrich one another’s understanding. Professor Jonathan Wallis of Moore College of Art will join us for the first session to discuss the changing role of the viewer in the history of art. We’ll wrap up the final session over dessert and coffee. Especially recommended for those who are new to looking at art and recent college graduates, but all are welcome.
