From classical Noh Theater with its gorgeous costumes, musical instruments & librettos, to poetry competitions, to the everyday pleasures of fishing, the pleasures and pastimes depicted in Japanese art are many and varied. Auspicious symbols play a major role in Japanese Art and are meant to bring happiness, prosperity, and longevity. Artist often use these symbols as motifs and patterns in their work.

Manish Malhotra is known for his intricate craftsmanship and glamorous designs, which are a favorite among celebrities. His catwalk shows at Fashion Week are regularly featured in Vogue India and other magazines. Entirely self-taught, he first made his mark as a costume designer for film in the 1990s before launching his eponymous label in 2005.

Phulkari fabrics were the basis of Malhotra’s autumn/winter 2013 collection. Two of his phulkari ensembles are on view in the exhibition Phulkari: The Embroidered Textiles of Punjab from the Jill and Sheldon Bonovitz Collection.
